So yeah, I managed to tear my hamstring tendon this weekend. Suffice it to say it was the sound more than the extreme pain that made me almost faint. Not to make you toss your cookies, but it was a lot like the sound you get when you break a raw chicken leg and tear it from the body. You know… that grinding, popping, tearing sound. Or for you vegans (this is Portland, after all), like twisting a whole bunch of celery in half.
The good news is I did this 14 years ago to the same tendon and it never healed right. Okay that’s NOT good news. The good news is, I have an opportunity to heal well, finally. And in fact, this is just what the doctor ordered with regard to establishing equilibrian in my pelvis from the accident with the truck last year. OK… They didn’t say, “dude, go shred your hamstring”, but I was discussing the possibility of a therapy wherin the Doc uses a meat tenderizer and pulverizes the tendon, which–oddly enough–heals up better than before, due to being traumatized. Go figure.
I really do see this is an opportunity to repair my body better than before. I’m being very, very good about following the treatment protocols.I’m bummed I am on forced rest for now, but I will be very excited to see how my cycling is affected when I get back on the bike. Since this happened, I have not had pain in my hip, which has been killing my on-bike training.
My racing season will start later than expected, but I’ll be in great shape just in time for track… And even if I am still a bit gimpy, I’m sure I’ll at least do better than Lee Evans.
