That Which You Are Seeking Is Causing You to Seek

Happy New Year! I’m finally getting around to blogging again. After last year’s racing season I just needed to do something different for awhile. I couldn’t race cyclocross at all, because of injury, and all that jumping around and running was just too painful. Yeah yeah… Sometimes pain is weakness leaving the body. And sometimes it is just a dumbass thing to keep doing to yourself. So I took the fall off, got totally bummed out because I couldn’t do CX, and moped and whined for 3 months. Good times! In December we got hit with tons of snow, so I started heading for the hills as often as possible to snowshoe. Even managed to go tubing a time or two. And over the New Year holiday I took some time off to explore a new sport. Turns out I have some aptitude with rock climbing, and I LOVE IT. I signed up for a monthly membership at a rad bouldering gym and bought shoes and a chalk bag, and now trying to work it into my schedule to keep it up 2x a week. This week I finally started riding my bike again and doing drills. I feel slow and heavy. All the running should be helping with fitness, but I still just FEEL out of shape. I want to drop 10 pounds this year and get really lean for racing. I’ve adjusted my diet some, no more beer! *gasp* Well, okay, not during the week. I can still have desserts and beer on weekends. And I will keep running for a couple more weeks. It just burns more fat faster than cycling does. By end of this monthI hope to be back to 4x a week full on training with an emphasis on power workouts and hills. I will keep lifting all year this year. The evidence is in that women, especially of a certain age, should keep lifting to maintain muscle mass. My body seems to respond pretty quickly to changes in volume, intensity and adapts to new activities quickly. I’m lucky in that regard. My hip and back are still a mess from that accident in ‘06… time off doesn’t really seem to help. PT, core strength, chiropractic… Nothing seems to really make a lasting difference. Sitting is almost always painful, so I bought an upright standing desk for work, and so I can blog ya…

MY next teacher training starts in Feb and will keep my weekends busy for the next three months. Otherwise, in my teaching work I have returned to my roots in ashtanga yoga. There is so much “creativity” happening in yoga sequencing right now… So much “play” and not enough of the discipline and learning the finer nuances of a tradition. As a career yoga teacher, I feel it is incumbent upon me to preserve both the art and the tradition, and reinforce the notion that this is not an entertainment. It is a discipline. In our culture we oftwn equate that word to mean punishment. Some people may consider it such. I think the serious student of yoga will appreciate the INCREASED BENEFIT to practicing in this way. Let all those who enter my classroom be warned! This year, I’m gettin’ medieval on y’all.

That’s it for now. Happy New Year. Thanks for reading. Say hi now and then. I’m going to try to add more pics and videos this year, so come back again.
